Keep Boxted Scouting

Have you noticed the increase in activity on St George field on a Monday night, since 12th April 2021 and wondered what is going on?

44th Colchester Scout Group have been using the village hall as a temporary home, while it has not been possible to meet at our normal venue at Highwoods Community Primary School.

It has been an excellent location to enable Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts to return to face-to-face meetings.

COVID rules permitting, we would like to return to our core catchment area in September.

But we thought it would be a nice legacy of our stay in Boxted if we could grow the Group, by starting a Beaver meeting or even a Cub meeting at the village hall in Boxted.

For that to happen we need two vital ingredients:

Boys and girls who want to enjoy the everyday adventure of Scouting, a chance to have fun with friends and learn #Skills for Life.

Volunteers to help make one or both of these new sections possible, so they too can have fun and help young people grow.

  • Beavers 6 – 8 years
Beavers are our youngest members, and generally meet for around an hour per week.

They enjoy all that Scouting has to offer; being introduced to outdoor activities, having the opportunity to be creative, explore their local community and experience the excitement of a Beaver Scout sleepover with their friends.

The Beaver Colony is the first and youngest section of the Scout Group.

Beaver Scouts are young people aged between 6 and 8 years old. There is core flexibility in the age range: young people can join from age 5¾ and can move to Cubs between age 7½ and 8½.

  • Cubs 6 – 8 years
For Cubs, excitement and adventure are key. Their programme offers a huge variety of activities surrounding areas of fitness, global and beliefs; whilst allowing them to be creative and get involved in their local communities.

Cubs are introduced to exciting outdoor skills and take part in adventurous activities, as well as camps and residential experiences.

The Cub Pack is the second section of the Scout Group following on from Beavers. Cub Scouts are young people aged between 8 and 10 ½. There is core flexibility in the age range: young people can join from age 7½ and can move to Scouts between age 10 and 11.

If you are interested in Joining please contact:

Editor’s note:

2nd Langham Scout Group, who meet on Wednesdays at Langham Community Centre, also have vacancies.

Are you waiting for your second jab?

For anyone waiting for their second Astra Zeneca vaccination there seems to be spare capacity at Colchester football stadium at the moment. It is worth dropping by to see if they can fit you in there or then or to re-schedule an appointment.

Rapid Lateral Flow tests can be ordered online at: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests

They arrive in the post the next day and people using them regularly find them very re-assuring.

Needs new volunteers. We have an excellent but small team of regular volunteers who have continued to work unfailingly in support of the shop through the lockdowns over the past year. More are now urgently needed to help fill the shifts. Full training will be given and two volunteers always work together. There is the option of working a regular shift or filling gaps in the rota to suit personal availability. A small commitment can make a big difference to the continuing operation of the shop and the services it offers to the local community.

For more details please contact Cath Hine, Volunteer Co-ordinator, on 07825 952560.
