Village Defibs
As many of you will have heard, Denmark’s Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest when playing a recent football match in the Euro 2020 event, His life was saved by the use of a defibrillator – a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest.
It’s seems fitting to remind readers that both Langham and Boxted have such devices available should they be needed in a medical emergency. They are sited at the following locations:
- Outside Langham Community Shop
- At the Royal British Legion, Straight Road, Boxted
- At the Community Hub in Boxted
Boxted Bridge update
You might like to see this photograph of the earlier wooden bridge at Boxted built sometime after 1835. From Essex Records Office we know that this was the wooden bridge that then fell into disrepair resulting, in 1896, to George Double’s tender being accepted for the sum of £927 to build a steel girder bridge here.
From the men’s clothes the photograph might have been taken around the 1880s or 1890s. Island Cottage is seen in the background beyond the bridge.
Boxted Bridge assessment report by Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd
Essex Highways requested the view of the feasibility of repair of Boxted Bridge from both a practicability and economic viewpoint from Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd, in conjunction with Cass Hayward. In the event that refurbishment is not considered economically feasible, Cass Hayward were asked to outline a reconstruction option for further consideration. This assessment report is now available for the public to view on Essex Highways Boxted bridge webpage or can be downloaded here (pdf)

Partial Eclipse
The photo above shows a view of the partial eclipse of the Sun taken by local astrophotographer Nik Szymanek from his back garden in Boxted at 10.30am on 10 June.
A special filter was used to photograph the Sun safely through Nik’s telescope. Shown at the upper left of the photo is the Moon partially obscuring the Sun.
Weather conditions weren’t ideal as cloud obscured the latter half of the eclipse, but Nik waited patiently for a gap in the clouds to get this lovely snapshot.
Eclipses of the Sun aren’t common and occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth line up. In this case the alignment wasn’t perfect so the Moon only obscured part of the Sun’s disc.
Ambitious plans to help turn Essex into a walking and cycling county are going on show to the public and Essex Highways want to hear your views. You are being invited to give your views on safer, greener, healthier cycling and walking routes in five towns across the county, including Colchester, in the Active Travel Essex consultation. The consultation will run until 2 July 2021.
