Severalls Lane Bridge
You may have wondered when (or if) the repairs to Severalls Lane Bridge will take place. The lane restriction has been in place for over a year now and there appears to be no sign of any work commencing.
In a letter to local MP, Sir Bernard Jenkin, Highways England issued the following update:
“We acknowledge that the long-term closure on this bridge may be frustrating drivers. However, safety is our highest priority, and we will only remove the restrictions when it is safe to do so.
A lorry carrying an excavator struck the bridge in March 2020. Following initial visual inspections, we found that two of the four supporting beams and associated bracing were damaged. This had weakened the bridge. We therefore closed the bridge to reduce the loading on the structure and ensure the safety of road users.
After further inspections, we opened the southbound lane across the bridge. The northbound lane closure ensures that no traffic passes over the damaged beams beneath the northbound lane and footway. Ongoing monitoring of the damage continues to ensure the bridge remains safe to use in its current condition.
A detailed investigation of the damage was carried out at the end of March 2021. We expect the results later this spring. They will tell us what action is needed to repair the damage. The results will also tell us if it’s possible to completely remove the lane closure by using new monitoring techniques that have recently become available.
