    Colchester Local Plan meeting

    Tuesday 4 March 6:00pm
    Colchester Town Hall

Colchester Council has published its revised Local Plan proposals (details below), which include an additional 11,000 homes to be built over the next 15 years. This is on top of the existing housing proposals of just over 900 homes a year. This reflects the fact the Government are mandating that Colchester builds an extra 40% each year with proposals for 150 homes in Boxted and a whopping 900 in Langham.

Details of the agenda, a live broadcast of the meeting (which can be viewed via the Council’s YouTube channel) and the local plan document, including maps of preferred sites can be found HERE.

The meeting on 17 February did not agree to go to consultation (Reg18) on the preferred options for development – by a very narrow vote. This next meeting is now scheduled for 4March but because the planning team have to get more evidence and infrastructure plans the timetable for consultation is now slipped to nearer Nov/Dec 25. Details are contained in the Agenda document on the above link.

    Bus service request

At the request of Boxted Parish CounciI Cllr Lewis Barber had asked both the operator and ECC about extending the Boxted bus timetable (80/80A) to allow students/others to get into central Colchester for before 9 or have a bus service that leaves Colchester after 3:10pm, or if a shorter bus even could go to P&R for onward travel.

Unfortunately, this request has been rebuffed but Cllr Barber is reverting to try and understand the reasons why and to see if they will reconsider.

    Seeing The Planets

There has been a lot of media interest in the visibility of the planets this week. While it is quite unusual for so many to be visible in the evening sky, several are difficult to see without a telescope. Mercury may be visible low in the west once the sky is dark enough, but it never rises high above the horizon. Saturn is nearby but it is even lower. Neptune is quite close to Mercury but requires a telescope. Uranus is much higher but requires binoculars or a small telescope.

Happily, the remaining planets are putting on a great show. In the west Venus is blazing in the twilight and is impossible to miss. Both Jupiter and Mars are visible high in the south and will be easy to pick out against the fainter stars as the sky darkens. Note the distinct pastel red colour of Mars which makes it unmistakeable.
