    Boxted Bridge Planning Application (CC/COL/106/21)

Boxted Parish council has sent the following item to  all members of the Development and Regulation Committee who are scheduled to decide this application on Friday 25th April.
It sets out the risks in prematurely deciding the planning application at this stage.

The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of the position regarding the planning application for Boxted Bridge. There will be many pages available to both committee members and planning officers. This highlights major points.

The planning application seeking permission to replace Boxted Bridge is difficult. The bridge is a uniquely historic heritage asset sitting in the major National Landscape (formerly called AONB) in Essex. It sits in an incredibly rural and beautiful landscape with important wildlife and ecology. Its beauty was recognised by Gainsborough and Constable with their paintings from the bridge displayed in the National Gallery. Bordering Suffolk with a single track crossing the stunning River Stour at Boxted Mill and surrounded by listed buildings, it has been enjoyed by cyclists, pedestrians and light traffic for over 125 years.

Its sprung design with cambered and humped features naturally restricts the speed and volume of traffic in this protected setting. Dampening the transmission of vibrations is important where the valley soil is known to be prone to liquefaction. It is approached by 3 single track roads, each with a culvert bridge spanning flood plain which are designated and are engineered for light traffic only
