    Village News and Events

    in Boxted and Langham

Welcome to this week’s newsletter – giving you a reminder of some of the regular events taking place in Boxted and Langham as well as highlighting some issues which might be of interest to you. This week, Essex County Council is hosting an event on fostering a child. Perhaps you’d thought about this – if so, pop along to the Holiday Inn next Saturday to find out more. We now have our very own Essex Shed – a place for men to share conversation and tools whilst engaging in practical projects (most commonly wood craft) and an opportunity for women to get their men out of the house for a while!  There is also an article on Hornestreet Nature Reserve, a wonderful resource for the local community.

Hornestreet Nature Reserve comes of age!

After almost 20 years, volunteers from Langham, Essex, in conjunction with the Dedham Vale AONB have established a small Nature Reserve in the village for the benefit of the local community.

In the early 1900`s land in this part of Langham was known as Hornestreet. The field was part of a small farm with outbuildings and eventually a fruit farm up to 1975. In 1999 a small group of Langham residents purchased the field and included a small pond that had dried up elsewhere in the village.

Since 1999, many local people have helped in the initial design work, tree planting work and many village residents have donated trees in support of this initiative.

Today a fine selection of trees, and hedging are now well established providing an excellent site for conservation learning. The Dedham Vale AONB team have been so helpful in developing this site which will now be known as Hornestreet Nature Reserve.

The venue is used by the Langham Primary school for conservation education as well as the Langham Pre- school and the Langham Scout group. The site also hosts undergraduates from London University as part of their course programme while staying at Flatford.

Declutter sale. Clear your home of unwanted items and raise funds for Boxted church tower repair. Saturday 20 July at Langham Community Centre. Our volunteer collectors will take and store any contributions you are able to make up to the sale date. Contact Graham and Gill Pullen on 273804 or Stephen Whybrow on 272773 for more information.
