Welcome to this week’s newsletter – giving you a reminder of some of the regular events taking place in Boxted and Langham. This week is your last chance to donate plants to the Summer Fete. You can drop off at the school on the morning of the fete on Friday.
Is photography your thing? Try your hand at the Boxted in 2019 competition. Full details are set out below.
Unfortunately this week we have to report another instance of dog poo blighting the enjoyment of the community. If you’re a dog owner and walk your dog on public ground, please be responsible and use the red bins provided.

Hill Farm, Old Mill Road, Langham CO4 5NX
Every Thursday morning 10.30am
Although it was wet, the first meeting at Hill Farm went rather well! Six ‘Shedders’ were present at the meeting and some good progress was made. Key points agreed were:
- From people’s availability via email and from discussion from those there on the day, it has been agreed that Thursday at 10:30am will be the regular session times, starting 20th June.
- It was the general consensus from all those present that the ‘utility rooms’ at the back of the barn were to used as the initial base of operations. There are 3/4 small rooms which will initially be secured as the shed, expanding into the barn as progress sees fit.
- Roger Newman has kindly agreed to be shed lead during the start up phase. Eventually this will mean he will be the first point of contact, will generally run the sessions, key holder etc.
For the next session wear rough clothes. Bring brooms, brushes, cloths etc. as sweeping, cleaning and de-cobwebbing the rear rooms and the main barn will be the first port of call. Any spare white emulsion and brushes would be appreciated as a lick of paint is long overdue.
Bring torches and thermos flasks as there is no electricity supply. Any tools you can fit in your cars, bring with as we need to de-nail a few things, take some doors off their hinges, install some bolts etc.

Join them for a couple of hours on the first Friday of each month for a free lunch and a chat.

Plea for plants!
Boxted School Association welcomes any plant donations for the plant stall at our Summer Fête to be held from 3.15pm on Friday 28th June at Boxted St. Peter’s Primary School.
Last year we had a great response from local residents and we hope you will be able to support us again.
Please leave any donations outside the school reception area on Friday morning. All funds raised will benefit the children of Boxted St Peter’s.

Neighbourhood Watch update
Park Lane, Langham: Suspects unknown have smashed front door glass of two offices within complex. Untidy search made and IMac computer stolen from one of the offices.
Sky Hall Hill, Boxted: Suspects unknown have removed the victims 7 foot 5 bar wooden gates by means unknown.

Photography competition
Our aim is to provide a contemporary record of Boxted in 2019 for the village archive as part of the fundraising activities for the repair of the roof and masonry of St. Peter’s Church, Boxted, which are urgently in need of repair.
There will be eight categories with winners in each category (including an Under 16 winner in each category).
Categories:
- Boxted’s Four Seasons
- Boxted Farming and Horticulture
- Boxted People
- Boxted Countryside including Wildlife, Trees and Wild Flowers
- Conservation and Risks to the Environment
- Boxted Leisure Activities
- Village Institutions, Activities & Events
- Signs of Boxted’s Past, including Buildings
The judge(s) will take into account the artistic and technical quality of the images and the insight into daily life in Boxted.
Judging will take place in January 2020 followed by an exhibition in the village of the winning images. It is also planned to publish a book of the winning images and possibly a calendar.
Entries will be £1 per image (50p for Under 16’s) with 50p for each image in excess of 10.

When Good Neighbours become good friends
Good Neighbours have just celebrated 10 years of service to the people of Boxted and Langham. They are in need of more volunteers to give a helping hand.

Cutting and clearance of vegetation
Did you know it is possible to check who is responsible for cutting footpaths on the Essex County Council PROW interactive map? Visit https://www.essexhighways.org/Getting-Around/public-rights-of-way/vegetation-cutting.aspx for further information.
It is a duty of the highway authority to keep public rights of way free from obstruction by natural upgrowth [Highways Act 1980, Section 41].
Keeping side growth from encroaching on to a path is the responsibility of the landowner, although hedges may be trimmed back by ECC as part of the works associated with the seasonal cutting of paths.
When and where is it needed?
Vegetation cutting of the natural seasonal upgrowth on our PROW network is undertaken between April and October. We deliver this service through the following schemes:
Maintenance Teams have an established annual cutting programme, which allows for the most cost-effective programming of routine work. Visit our district maps below to see whether the paths near you are on our schedule. These paths will be cut during June and July, if conditions permit.
Where cutting is requested on a path not contained in the programme an assessment will be made on site as to whether it should be added to future programmes or cut on an ad hoc basis. Please report this online from the Report a Problem page.
Faeces of the Village
Dog faeces was spread over play equipment, possibly late in the day on Monday 17 June.
If anyone has any idea of who may have been responsible for the above please contact Karen Thompson, the parish clerk, in confidence on boxtedparishcouncil@gmail.com or telephone the police on 101.
Dog owners: please use the red bins on the playing field to dispose of your dog’s poo and not the bins in the play area or outside the village hall.
A little more care when disposing of your furry friend’s waste could eliminate this antisocial behaviour.
Boxted Methodist Church exhibition
Saturday 6 July 2-4pm
Sunday 7 July 12.30pm
The final service at Boxted Methodist Chapel will be held on Sunday 7 July at 3 pm accompanied by the Silver Band. This will be a respectful, loving remembrance of all that has been achieved at the Chapel by so many dedicated people since its opening approximately 187 years ago.
During the weekend of 6 – 7 July it is also hoped to have a small display featuring some of the history over the years.
On the Saturday the Chapel will be open for viewing from 2 pm – 4 pm and on the Sunday from 12.30 pm with the service commencing at 3 pm.
All are welcome to what will be a display and service remembering the Chapel and its long-standing association with the village.
