    Hawthorn buds – a welcome sign that nature is moving forward. Did you know that the hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) can support more than 300 types of insect? Its flowers are eaten by dormice and provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects. The haws are rich in antioxidants and are eaten by migrating birds, such as redwings, fieldfares and thrushes, as well as small mammals.

    Colchester Borough Council’s annual ‘Trees for Years’ giveaway returns on Saturday 22nd February at the Community Stadium, Axial Way. This year, as part of the Colchester Woodland Project and to mark the start of a new decade, there will be ten thousand trees given away.

    Also known as ‘Bing’, the late Lord Edmund Ironside lived in Boxted, in Priory House, for many years. There will be a Memorial Service for Lord Ironside at St Peter’s Church, Boxted on Thursday 13th February.
