    National Grid’s Green Project

The next consultation meeting for this proposed project is:

    • Saturday 28 May, 10am-4pm
Lawford Venture, Centre, Bromley Road, Lawford, Manningtree CO11 2JE

Lewis Barber, Essex County Councillor for Constable Ward, together with respective borough councillors across the division have compiled the following joint letter in response to the East Anglia Green current proposals.

“National Grid’s current proposals for a new over-ground pylon route across much of its East Anglia is totally unacceptable. We fully support of the concept of North Sea wind farms to generate abundant, cheap, clean electricity. Furthermore, the recent increase in energy prices, coupled with the global insecurity of energy supplies gives added impetus to this strategy.. At the recent public consultation events, National Grid confirmed that upgrades to the offshore route was a viable alternative.

Therefore, our strongly preferred approach is an upgrade to the offshore route. By doing so, the environmental damage, disruption and despoliation that would be caused to East Anglia by the installation of hundreds of over-ground pylons would be minimised.

We demand that National Grid holds a full public consultation on all options, with full details and costings being made available for public scrutiny, not simply an informal consultation on their pre-selected over-ground route.

We will continue to lobby National Grid and the Government to ensure that all necessary infrastructure is delivered in a sustainable manner. For us, this means moving the proposed new pylon route to an off-shore location
    .

We would urge all communities to have their say on National Grid’s consultation portal and sign the petition for offshore upgrades instead:

No more moments like this if the bridge is replaced!

Cyclists recently enjoyed a stop on the bridge. These quiet moments of pleasure and contemplation of nature will be denied if Essex Highways is granted planning permission to demolish the bridge. Highways’ ‘nuclear’ replacement bridge has an increased parapet height of 1.5m and it will be much harder for anyone to look over the parapets at the view let alone look down at the fish.

Please tell everyone you know to sign the petition to save the bridge! See full details here,

Home Improvements – beware of rising costs

We have recently seen a sharp increase in complaints about the prices charged for building work. With the costs of both materials and labour shooting up sharply in the last few months many consumers are facing bills higher than they expected. In addition, many everyday materials are in short supply meaning that last minute changes to specifications have become unavoidable, resulting in uncertainty about the final price to be paid.

Many consumers have been caught out by the fact that they have entered into a contract on the basis of an estimate rather than a confirmed quote. Estimates are usually an educated guess of the costs/time to complete a project and wouldn’t necessarily include the finer details of a job. Most importantly, an estimate is usually non-binding, and the final bill for all the work can be higher. A quote should outline all aspects of the building work agreed and detail final prices for both the labour and exact materials to be used (providing the specification doesn’t change). Best practice would be to include as much detail as you can about your project, being clear about who is responsible for what, anticipated timescales, planning permission details, and what should happen in the even that a change in materials is needed or if a delay is necessary.

It is recommended that consumers try and obtain at least three quotes for the work they are proposing and that the same specification for the job is given and agreed with all the businesses. While it can be tempting to select the lowest quote always be wary of just opting for the cheapest. Ensure everything you need is covered and that there is a detailed breakdown of what is included, and importantly, what isn’t included in the amount being specified. Beware of suspiciously low quotes. If something seems too good to be true, it often is!

If you need consumer advice about a building project you have undertaken please contact Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133 or by visiting their website here.
