Community defibrillator for Church Street

Could you host it?

Boxted Parish Council is working to install a public access defibrillator on Church Street, and we are writing to ask whether any resident would be willing to host it. We would be very grateful for your help.

Why a defibrillator here?
When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute without defibrillation reduces their chance of survival by around 10%. An ambulance can take some time to reach a rural location like Church Street, so a defibrillator within a short walk can make a real difference. Church Street is well used by residents, walkers, visitors to the church and graveyard, and people using the village hall, so we believe a defibrillator here would serve the whole village. Anyone can use one: the device talks the user through each step, and no training is needed.

What would hosting involve?
We are looking for a property whose boundary (for example, a wall, fence or gatepost facing the road) could carry a small external storage cabinet housing the defibrillator. The cabinet would be:

  • Securely fixed, weatherproof and kept in good condition
  • Registered on The Circuit, the national defibrillator network, so that ambulance services can direct callers to it in an emergency
  • Clearly signed, so that it can be found quickly in an emergency

Who pays, and who is responsible?
The parish council would meet all the costs, including the defibrillator, the cabinet, installation, and ongoing maintenance such as replacing pads and batteries. There would be no cost to you.

The parish council would own and insure the equipment and would be responsible for regular checks, upkeep and registering the defibrillator on The Circuit. The device is fully automatic and gives spoken instructions to whoever uses it, so hosting it does not require any training or involvement from you. Before anything is installed, we would agree the exact position with you and set out the arrangement in a simple written agreement. This would include the right for you to ask us to remove the unit if you no longer wish to host it.

What happens next?
If you would be happy to host the defibrillator, or would simply like to know more before deciding, please contact Karen Thompson, Clerk to Boxted Parish Council on 07971 525688 or clerk@boxted-pc.gov.uk

We would be glad to visit, talk through the options and answer any questions. There is no obligation, and we appreciate you considering it.he moment. Please purchase tickets in the shop or just turn up on the night and pay on entry.
