Village clean-up

Boxted Wildlife would like to say a big thank you to those who attended the litter pick and sign cleaning morning on Saturday 29 April.

There were over 20 volunteers taking part and we managed to cover the roads within the centre of the village (within 30 mph zones), as well as around Boxted Church Street. As we’ve mentioned before, Boxted does have a very dedicated team of regular pickers, so the amount of rubbish recovered was not horrendous, but it was still good to get into some of the more difficult to reach places, including ditches etc. If anyone is interested in joining the regular litter picking team then get in touch and we can pass you on to the relevant people.

Sign cleaning was an important part of the morning and was a great success with many road and street signs now looking a lot cleaner and brighter. We plan to also clean signs further out of the village when we get a chance, but we note that some motivated members of the community have already been out cleaning signs on their own. As part of the clean up we have also taken note of those signs that require repair or replacement and are putting together a catalogue of these to take forward to the Parish Council and the Highways department.

Weeding and planting on the Village Green was also undertaken at the weekend and further mowing and tidying will be occurring this week so it will be resplendent for the Coronation Weekend. Boxted Wildlife will be at the Coronation Party on Boxted Playing Fields on Sunday 7 May, offering activities for children that focus on Hedgehogs as part of our Help 4 Hogs campaign. There will also be an opportunity for adults to learn about how you can become part of the Hedgehog Highway and help make Boxted a Hedgehog friendly village! Hope to see everyone there,

Calling all Gants!

James Gant is looking for ancestral  links. He writes:

“I would be interested to find out if there are any people with the name GANT still in Boxted. The records show my grandfather Walter, born 1894,my great grandfather James born 1821,my great great grandfather James born 1794, my great great great grandfather Francis born 1723,and great great great great grandfather James born 1723 were born in Boxted. If not, maybe other children with different married name may exist.

“If you could point me in the right place I would appreciate it – thanks!”

Be Safe – Be Seen

Although the daylight hours are getting longer the village roads are still very dangerous with the high volume of traffic that travels through our community.

Please take care of yourselves and help drivers see you by wearing Hi Viz clothing when out walking, running or cycling.

Following on from this safety message, Cllr Lewis Barber has recently posted a link on Facebook directing people to a Feasibility Study for Improved Pedestrian, Cyclist and Equestrian access to/from Northern Gateway which includes Boxted and Langham. His comment is as follows, which includes a download link to the study:

“I am pleased to enclose (as a Dropbox link below) the feasibility study produced for the above.

“This is a comprehensive report that Essex Highways commissioned Sustrans, the national charity for sustainable transport, to produce. The report covers a variety of different options to and from Boxted/Langham from changing speed limits to resurfacing and the creation of new, segregated infrastructure. I part funded this through my locality budget having received a significant number of requests about the issue of connectivity between the villages and Northern Gateway.

“I welcome the fact that there is choice offered and of course doing nothing is an option too. You will find the recommendations and estimated costings at page 44.”
