Clearing the church grounds session

Saturday 30 April 10am – 2pm
St Peter’s Church, Boxted

Although there remains much to do, a real impact has been made and it is particularly good to see the new hedging planted and thriving.

The main objective for this session will be to continue the clear-up of the northern boundary including the north-east end which has so far been untouched.

If anyone could bring a petrol driven strimmer this would be helpful.

This will be the last session before we resume in the autumn since it is not ideal to cut down trees and bushes on the summer months and particularly not good for nesting birds.

Any questions please contact Stephen Whybrow 01206 272773 or Dominic Shiel dominic@poplargs.co.uk

Save our bridge campaign

Row over £271,000 spent on Boxted Bridge replacement plans

Gazette article 19.04.2022

Campaigners fighting to save a bridge claim £271,000 of taxpayer’s money has been spent on investigations…money which could have been spent on repairs. Lucinda de Jasay (pictured above) is adamant Boxted Bridge should be repaired and not replaced.  Read the full article here.

 Are you hedgehog aware?

Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from 1st – 7th May 2022. It is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and takes place every year. It aims to highlight the problems hedgehogs face and how you can help them.

  • Make a Hedgehog Highway in Fences – 5” x 5” (13 x 13cm) square gaps in the bottom of fences or walls should do it! Once created you can log these on the BIG Hedgehog Map at www.bighedgehogmap.org
  • Create an undisturbed log pile that will offer shelter and food.
  • Offer water and meaty cat or dog food for hedgehogs – you can even build a feeding station to help keep the food safe for hedgehogs (see plans on BHPS website or contact us for a paper copy)
  • Check areas carefully before mowing or strimming.
  • Ditch pesticides and poisons.
  • Ensure there is an easy route out of ponds and pools.
  • Create a wild corner – leave a corner or edge to go wild supplying shelter and natural food for hedgehogs in the form of bugs and grubs!

Regulars in Langham

The Langham Community Centre hosts a wide range of regular clubs and unique activities. Many of these groups would welcome new members, so don’t hesitate to browse the ‘Activities’ page on the website or see the Facebook page to find out more.

If you have an idea for a new club or event, please contact Sue Armstrong by calling 07741 284132 or emailing LanghamCC@gmail.com to further discuss your idea.

At the last meeting, Brenda Green, a potter, spoke on “A ball of clay to a finished pot”, explaining the various techniques of potting and inviting members to try their hand at designing a tile. Members will now have to wait to see if their handiwork survives the kiln. The next meeting on Thursday, 12 May at 7.30 pm, will be a fashion show presented by Bromley & Co. from Ipswich. Non-members are most welcome to attend for a small fee.
