Covid vaccination programme needs you!

The NHS has declared a major incident in relation to the administration of the COVID 19 booster vaccine. A number of ‘delivery platforms’ will be used to ramp-up vaccinations, including vaccination centres (existing and new); community pharmacies; PCNs (GPs); Hospital Hubs, Pop up centres, drive-thru facilities (probably in unused retail parks e.g. B&Q Hythe) and an outreach programme to large business premises.

Volunteers are desperately needed to help ensure the smooth running of the new and old vaccination clinics.

Could you consider volunteering? If you are interested, please contact Community360 who will be once again helping support this aspect of the vaccination roll out.

Boxted Bridge update

The photo above illustrates the parapet height and width of the replacement bridge that Essex Highways has designed.

Members of the public would no longer be able to lean over to view the river directly below (or play poohsticks!)

The planning application to replace Boxted Bridge is now on the ECC Planning portal – CLICK HERE TO VIEW . Comments can be submitted from 7th Jan and consultation closes on the 28th Jan – just 3 weeks.

The Boxted Parish Council will decide it’s comments at the Parish Council meeting on 12th January. However, there is nothing to stop people commenting in their own name, as residents.

Essex Highways page shows progress of the project so far:

The December edition of Highways Highlights looks specifically at ‘eyes in the sky’ – the drones that are providing safer, more cost-effective bridge inspections. It also looks at important flood information, how to reduce your carbon footprint, sustainable transportation plans in Essex and new paths that have been installed by the Highways team at Little Havens hospice.

New Management Plan launched for AONB

The 2021-2026 Management Plan for the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Stour Valley Project Area will guide decision making in the nationally important landscape. The Plan has been developed in consultation with environmental, commercial, agricultural, and community interests.

The Management Plan sets out the special characteristics and qualities of the Dedham Vale AONB and Stour Valley project area and formulates the local authorities’ policies for its management and for carrying out their functions in relation plan-making and decision taking as part of development management.

The plan sets out a vision balancing the many complex needs of the area and can contribute to benefits for people, place, nature and the climate.”

Christmas recycling collections

Give your recycling containers a good stuffing this Christmas!

Here’s some simple festive recycling tips:

  • Wrapping paper and cards can go in your clear paper recycling bag, unless it’s covered in glitter or metallic foil, in which case it should go in your black bin/bag.
  • Turkey bones and other leftovers that can’t be reused can go into your food waste caddy. Check out  lovefoodhatewaste.com  for great leftover recipes.
  • Tinfoil from turkey and roast potatoes can be rinsed off and put in your tins & cans box.
  • Plastic trays from party food are fully recyclable and can be put into your clear plastic recycling bag.

Colchester Christmas Tree-cycle

We are working with St Helena Hospice to bring their Tree-cycle back this year. So, let St Helena Hospice handle the Christmas clean up by collecting and recycling your real tree on 8 January in exchange for a donation. They’re covering CO1 to CO9, CO11, CO13, CO14, CO15 and CO16 postcodes.

Blossom Circle planted as Covid memorial

We’ve made a start on planting four blossom circles as a memorial for the Covid-19 pandemic at Kings Head Meadow in Castle Park, working with the NHS and community partners.

It is hoped that this area will be a place to remember all those who have lost their lives, honour key workers, reflect on the borough’s shared experience of the pandemic, and help to signal reflection and hope following Covid-19. Planting will be completed in January 2022.

Easy steps to reduce toxic air in your home

As the weather turns colder, Colchester Borough Council is urging residents to be aware of the air pollution that could be generated if they don’t ensure the firewood they burn in log-burners and open fires is well-seasoned.

Find out how you can take positive action to reduce these risks and improve air quality both inside and outside the home.

Save money on your energy bills this winter

People across Colchester are being encouraged to check if they are eligible to receive help under a new Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery scheme – being launched to help local householders be warmer in their homes, lower their carbon emissions, and save money on their fuel bills this winter.

The last event of the year was a talk by actor David Webb, well known for his role in the TV show “Hi de Hi”. Accompanied with an excellent video show, and singing himself, all made for a very entertaining evening; a savoury buffet followed with desserts prepared by members. The following day was a trip to Snape Maltings where members were entertained by the Co-op Juniors Stage School, who performed an excellent Christmas spectacular.

The next meeting at 7.30 pm on Thursday 13 January in the Community Centre will be a talk on “The History of Perrywoods Nursery”. Existing members will be able to renew their membership and anyone wishing to join is cordially invited to come along.
