Graham Napier opens new artificial training strip at Boxted Cricket Club

Former Boxted player and Essex legend Graham Napier has formally opened a new training facility at Boxted Cricket club.

Also on hand to cut the ribbon on the new artificial playing surface was Graham Pryke, Cricket Development Manager at Essex Cricket in the Community.

Installation of the new artificial facility was made possible through a combination of a generous donation from Boxted Parish Council, money collected through club fund raising and a grant from the Essex and Southend Sports Trust.

Club Chairman Steve Philpott said:

“The new artificial pitch is a good and consistent surface for youngsters to gain confidence in playing cricket and we also hope that having such a facility in the village will encourage more local people to get involved in the sport”

Happy birthday to Betty

A celebration 90th birthday party was held for Betty Blundell, a past long time resident of Boxted and a member of Boxted Evergreens Club.

Also at the party was Doris Graves, who, until recently, has lived most her life in the village and was also a regular attendant at the club.

The two are old friends but they hadn’t seen one another due to Covid and it was great to see them enjoying each other’s company.

Boxted Silver Band was part of the afternoon entertainment as well as a Steel Band which brightened up an afternoon of heavy rain showers.

Unusual Greater Dodder plant flourishing beside Boxted bridge

While we wait for Essex Highways to present their revised bridge drawings and discuss the options to repair or replace we thought you might like to see this photo of an unusual plant living beside the bridge.

Greater Dodder (Cuscuta europaea) feeds parasitically, primarily on stinging nettle and hop. It likes to be near water, is decreasing in occurrence and is found locally in England south of Peterborough. It is not common and really quite rare.
