Proposed replacement of Boxted Bridge

As you know, there is a campaign by residents to repair Boxted Bridge rather than replace it. Replacement is the preferred option of Essex Highways. Campaigners who wish to have Boxted Bridge repaired have expressed observations on ECC plan, particularly on the issue of the width of the proposed new bridge option:

  • Essex Highways say it will look the same as the old one, when it is actually nearly twice the width. It won’t be able to replace the lovely old Victorian construction with its rivets and wonderful layers of patina.
  • The photos only show the side view which does not illustrate clearly just how wide this new bridge will be. The current bridge is (inside parapet to parapet) 4924mm wide at the Suffolk end, 6177mm at the Essex end, and the proposed new bridge would be 9270mm which includes a hard standing area for pedestrians.

Meanwhile, the campaign continues with more on the history of its builder:

George Double and Cleopatra’s Needle

In September 1878, George Double was very much in the news as John Dixon’s foreman, in charge of erecting Cleopatra’s Needle on the Victoria Embankment in London. Read the full update here .

A dedicated email address ( boxtedenquiries@essexhighways.org ) has been set up to support the public with any questions relating to the structure that are not already answered on the webpage.

Unacceptable litter in graveyard

A resident visited Boxted Church recently to tend her husband’s grave and was dismayed to see empty flower paper and plastic bottles left behind by other visitors,

She collected a half a black bag of rubbish to dispose of.

Let’s respect our open spaces and keep the graveyard a place of solace and reflection. Please take your rubbish home!

Reporting road problems to Essex Highways

All the roads in the village are inspected once a year but residents can report any problems to ECC Highways Department on the following link:

Problems are inspected fairly quickly but then dealt with depending on the severity.
