Restarting the cricket

Stephen Phillpot gives his account of the challenges facing the cricket club. Stephen writes:

“After the imposition of the lockdown went on and on, it was beginning to feel like we may well have to write off the 2020 cricket season, but things changed very rapidly at the beginning of July.

We had already begun to run net sessions prior to this and made sure that the cricket square was ready on time, so club members were keen and ready to go. However, it took a while to get to grips with the ECB rules for socially distanced cricket matches.

We held a an inter-club friendly on 19th July just to test that our procedures were running smoothly and now we are embarking on a series of friendlies for both our junior and senior sides (it was too late and too complicated to consider league cricket).

We are also about to start our junior training sessions, but at the moment on a Thursday evening rather than the usual Saturday morning.

In many ways it is the strangest of seasons and completely unprecedented for our current players. We find ourselves having to use the loos one at a time, stopping the game every six overs for hand hygiene , needing to clean down all our equipment before and after the game and keeping a record of all attendees for “track and trace” purposes should the worst happen.

Of course, many people face similar challenges so we know our situation is not unique, but it is nice to be back playing and, particularly ,to see the youngsters enjoying the game again. We are now hoping the weather will be kind to us so that we can extend the playing season well into September.”

One small ask – please wear a mask.It is now compulsory to wear face masks in stores. Exemptions apply:

  • A child under the age of 11
  • A person with breathing difficulties
  • Anyone with someone who relies on lip reading
  • People with disabilities

Thank you for understanding and keeping yourself, other customers and our volunteers safe

My Weight Matters program

The news from Central Government is that must all try to shed some of that extra weight we may have accumulated during lockdown.

Being overweight increases the risks of Covid-19. Increasing exercise is only part of the solution to this. Yes, it is beneficial to enjoy your walk, run or cycle, use the outside gym or enjoy a game of tennis, but nutrition and a balanced diet are key to losing weight and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

Sign up for My Weight Matters online. It’s free!
