Faces of the Village
You may have noticed the plaque at Langham church looks refreshed lately! Handy local resident Brian Flack refurbished the plaque, as part of his voluntary role as Fabric Officer for Langham church.
The Hurlock Schoolroom
The plaque sits on the outer wall of the Hurlock Schoolroom by St Mary’s Church, Langham. The schoolroom was erected in 1832 by Dr James Thomas Hurlock, Rector of Langham, as a girls’ school on weekdays and on Sundays “a resting place for the poor and infirm between services”.
It is thought that the schoolroom fell into disuse when the Board School (now Langham Primary School), which had been established in 1850, started to accept girls after being expanded in 1874.
The schoolroom continued as a home for the Sunday school into the 1950s. After a period of neglect the building was renovated in 1982; a lavatory and server were added in 1992. For many years thereafter it was used for the children’s Sunday Group during the Sunday Eucharist. It now hosts refreshments after church service.
Brian first stripped the rust and flaky paint from the plaque with a wire wool attachment on a drill, and metal files, then filed around each individual letter.
Brian then applied two base coats of white metal paint, then painted each individual letter in black. This process took weeks to complete because the reflection of the sun on the plaque’s white paint can cause temporary blindness, even despite Brian wearing two pairs of sun glasses!

Would you like to have a Men’s Shed in your area?
Sheds are community spaces where men can socialise, work on practical projects and learn new skills together. Whether making toys for craft fairs, planters for civic buildings or even restoring village signs you can be sure it’s not all about the wood or metal working- it’s just as much about the company; the morning ritual of tea and biscuits and banter, the sharing of stories as well as skills.
The first Men’s Shed opened in Maldon in 2014, since then the Essex Shed Network has provided support and advice to many other Sheds which have successfully opened across the county. And now we have found a site for a potential Shed between Langham and Boxted, but we need your help to get it off the ground and make it a success.
So, if you would like to have a Men’s Shed in your community, then please come along to an informal meeting that Boxted Parish Council is hosting at Boxted Village Hall to express your interest and find out more- Wednesday 22 May 7pm.
We look forward to meeting you there!
