Faces of The Village
Gill lived in Boxted for 28 years running Munson’s Poultry with her husband, John. Their Christmas turkeys were featured in Delia Smith, Rick Stein and supplied to Harrods, both Roux brothers & top London hotels.
Gill was very involved with the community during that time.
She helped run the youth club at the Methodist Hall with Glynis Rogerson for 13 years and as a Duke of Edinburgh leader helped the village’s children achieve their
D of E awards.
Gill was an active member of the WI, both as Treasurer, then President for four years.
At the time the Village Hall was running at a deficit, including a £500 electricity bill with no funds to pay it.
Together with another past resident, Wendy Haywood, Gill helped form a committee which eventually turned the VH finances around. The hall floor which was damp, was completely re-covered. A Lottery Fund grant was obtained renovate the kitchen. Other projects were also implemented to repair, replace and improve the hall facilities.
The Indoor Carpet Bowls club was started to encourage more involvement from the local community.
The playgroup used the village hall at that time, but play sessions with sand and water did not lend itself to the new floor so Gill, together her husband and two other past residents, John and Ann Newiss, formed another committee to raise funds to setup a new play area using nearby spare land owned by the Parish Council.
Following a lot of fundraising and the tireless help of many people in the village the concrete path, which leads round to the play area on King George field, was laid, a second-hand demountable building was sited and Boxted Playgroup moved in. The playgroup thrived and was the pre-cursor to the Little Owls pre-school which is now housed in purpose built premises next to the Community Hub.
Gill, who visited the recent McMillan coffee morning in Boxted, retired to Myland some years ago and is now enjoying leading a quiet life.
