    Neighbourhood Watch

Hobbs Drive, Boxted made a Hotspot by Police

    What is a Hotspot?

The Hot Spots report issued by Essex Police lists locations in Colchester where burglaries might occur. Data analysts working for Essex Police prepare these reports. They look at all the recent incidents of burglary and note the types of property, the methods used, the items stolen, timings, similarities, so called ‘signatures’, profiles of victims, trends and any intelligence about crime that has been received.

The analysts then prepare a list of Hot Spot locations where the police might decide to mount additional uniformed or plain-clothes patrols, visits by marked or unmarked cars, and other interventions that might catch someone or lead to a positive identification.

Here’s the important bit. A Hot Spot isn’t necessarily where burglaries have occurred, but it might be an area that it is reasonable to suppose they might.

For example, the Coop in Dedham experienced a ram raid burglary in December last year. As a result, other supermarkets in similar locations became Hot Spots where police and the store’s own security staff worked together to prevent it happening again.

So, being a hot spot doesn’t mean impending trouble, but it might. Our job is to encourage members living in such locations to take precautions, revue the existing security arrangements, and watch out for their family members, neighbours and friends.
