Welcome to this week’s newsletter – giving you a reminder of some of the regular events taking place in Boxted and Langham. Also featured this week is an article on property marking to deter potential theft, a useful future date for your diary to dispose of unwanted household items, plus a book review which accompanies details of the next visit by the mobile library. There is also a report about some antisocial behaviour at the Boxted playing field skateboard area. Let’s hope that this is an isolated incident.

Would you like to have a Men’s Shed in your area?
Sheds are community spaces where men can socialise, work on practical projects and learn new skills together. Whether making toys for craft fairs, planters for civic buildings or even restoring village signs you can be sure it’s not all about the wood or metal working- it’s just as much about the company; the morning ritual of tea and biscuits and banter, the sharing of stories as well as skills.
The first Men’s Shed opened in Maldon in 2014, since then the Essex Shed Network has provided support and advice to many other Sheds which have successfully opened across the county. And now we have found a site for a potential Shed between Langham and Boxted, but we need your help to get it off the ground and make it a success.
So, if you would like to have a Men’s Shed in your community, then please come along to an informal meeting that Boxted Parish Council is hosting at Boxted Village Hall to express your interest and find out more

The car park can get very congested when the freighter visits. It would be helpful if as many people as possible could use the overflow car park and walk their waste across to the freighter.
Did you know anyone can join the Royal British Legion? You don’t have to be ex-service personnel. The Royal British Legion supports serving members of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army, Royal Air Force, reservists, veterans and their families through life. Members play a vital role in ensuring that the Royal British Legion can continue to provide lifelong support to the Armed Forces community as well as upholding the importance of Remembrance. Antisocial behaviour at the playing field
Several tins of paint were put in the litter bins next to the Skateboard park. Subsequently they were opened and spilt on the skateboard equipment and base. A resident kindly put sand over the wet paint to try and limit the damage. Anyone who has any information please report to the parish clerk boxtedparishcouncil All information will be treated in confidence.
Recording and marking your property
Any markings on property that links and/or identifies it to its rightful owner may be a deterrent to the thief or burglar with the added potential of the return of the property to its owner.
Marked property unlawfully possessed may lead to a conviction and as such marked property is harder for the criminal to dispose of therefore the reward or motivation to the thief is diminished.
Our county’s second-hand dealers work with Essex Police effectively making stolen property “too hot to handle”!
Property marking can take many forms:
Property marking can take many forms:
- Overt marking is visible to everyone, Examples include ‘Cesar Data Tag’ on commercial plant, engraving or stencil painting a logo or adding a postcode using an indelible pen.
- Covert marking such as UV pens and Forensic Markers require a UV light source for the marking to fluoresce and become visible. Forensic Markers contain a trace marker that is unique to that registered owner and may in addition contain a microdot with a unique number. Reading of a postcode or analysis of that unique marker and/or reading the microdot can identify its owner. As these are invisible until scanned with a UV light source to benefit from its deterrent value it is important that stickers are displayed within windows of the premises and on the marked products. Additionally, where a community uses these with council permission, street signage may be considered. UV pens and sticker are widely available in stores or on the internet. Useful resources are – Smart Water and Selecta DNA
- Asset Recording is another method where you record the details of your property either on your own recording sheet or database (but not kept with the relevant property) or on an ‘ISO’ accredited database. Your records should include a description of the article and, where applicable, model, serial and IMEI numbers. It is important that stickers are displayed in windows of your premises and on the marked products. Photographs can also help in identifying property and can be uploaded to some databases, For advice on photographing property see “Recording Property” at the bottom of the Essex Police Heritage Watch webpage
- An example of a property recording database is: Immobilise. Immobilise can be used by members of the public and businesses to register their valued possessions or company assets. Details of registered possessions are viewable on the secure Police national property database (the NMPR). This database also links to the publicly accessible and second-hand dealer database ‘Checkmend’ which can be used for restricted searches to establish if an item is stolen.
