    Book review

    Imperium by Robert Harris

Robert Harris, the world’s master of innovative historical fiction, lures us into a violent, treacherous world of Roman politics at once exotically different from and yet startlingly similar to our own — a world of Senate intrigue and electoral corruption, special prosecutors and political adventurism – to describe how one clever, compassionate, devious, vulnerable man fought to reach the top.

Volunteer(s) needed to assist Boxted Parish Council in Community Hub and Playing Field consultation

Money has become available from Colchester Borough Council to assist in enhancing facilities which will benefit the whole community. Two contributions have been allocated to Boxted:

    • Community Facilities Contribution (“for the management of playing fields or the Community Hub”)
    • Open Space Sports and Recreation Contribution (“for improvement and enhancement of King George Playing Field with a specific need to improving the Community Hub”)

Any residents who are interested in volunteering with the parish council and Colchester Borough Council to research/decide how the money should be spent can show an expression of interest by contacting the clerk: Karen Thompson on boxtedparishcouncil@gmail.com.  Ideally they would have some experience in either research and delivery of consultations or delivering large or community based projects.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference to our community.

    Langham Ladies

The inaugural meeting of Langham Ladies was held in July 2017. Gill Brown, Maureen Shouksmith and Tricia Gooding decided that they must keep the community spirit going when the Langham WI folded – hence Langham Ladies was ‘born’.

Now in its third year, the small number of organisers has changed with Maureen now retired and Ginny Moss, Lea Oliver and Chris Clark taking up the reigns. There are approximately 60 members although, of course, they don’t all make every meeting.

Langham Ladies meet on the second Thursday of every month at Langham Community Centre at 8.00pm. After the meeting members are encouraged to sit and talk over a cup of tea/coffee and a piece of cake or similar.

    Below is 2019/2020 programme:-

Thursday 12 September – Dr Jane Pearson will be talking on prostitution in Victorian Colchester
Wednesday 2 October – a chance to see Colchester Operatic Society’s production of ‘Oliver’

    SCAM Calls concerning Broadband
One of our coordinators received a couple of phone calls over the weekend from someone saying they are the broad band provider. The caller went on to say that the line has been compromised and to press 1 to learn more. THIS IS A SCAM and we need to warn all members not to do anything at all other than to just put the phone down.

Another person, a member, received a similar call but this time the caller claimed it was BT. The member knew straight away that it was a SCAM since the member is not a customer of BT. BT has since confirmed that it would not make such a phone call.

    Drug Dealing
Colchester Police are having considerable success driving drug dealers from the Town Centre. Unfortunately, dealers are finding opportunities in other populous parts of Colchester. We can all help the Police by reporting any activity or suspicion of dealing that we might see. Let’s work with the police to drive dealers from Colchester District completely.

Cycle or walk to raise money for St. Mary’s or St. Peter’s churches

To take part in the Ride & Stride this September you can download sponsorship and other relevant forms at https://www.friendsofessexchurches.org.uk/ride-stride  or contact Stephen Garner (272599) or Annette Whybrow (272773) for further information or you can create your own fundraising page on Justgiving.

Riders and walkers are invited to find sponsors who will pay an agreed sum for each church or chapel visited on the day. This is a national event so you can cross into neighbouring counties and get your form signed up in the same way.

Half the money you raise will be spent on your church building. The other half will go towards repairing church buildings in Essex and East London.

If you can’t take part in the Ride+Stride but would like to make a donation, visit the Essex and East London Churches JustGiving page.
