Part of the Section 106 funds from the Hill Farm Development have been spent on a range of fitness equipment at the Playing Field.

    Meet Tom McGowan

The internet reaches far and wide and this village mailchimp newsletter is read in America.

One of the readers is Tom McGowan who got in touch wanting to purchase the village book ‘Boxted Migration’

    Tom writes:

“My name is Tom McGowan and I live in Tigard, a suburb of Portland Oregon in the US. I am the seventh great grandson of Reverend George Phillips who was part of the migration with the Winthrop fleet. He arrived in the area of Salem Massachusetts on June 12, 1630 aboard the flagship Arbella. He and Sir Richard Saltonstall founded the city of Watertown on the Charles River just west of Boston here in New England.

“I have been researching my family tree since I was 14 years old and I am now 81. Much of my research was done by speaking with family members before they passed away and once  ancestry.com  became available my work became considerably easier. I have been successful in tracing the Phillips family back to the ninth century in Wales.

“We are currently on a visit to the Boston area to visit Watertown and other small towns that were founded just after the Winthrop fleet arrived in 1630. It’s been a lifelong hobby for me to research my family tree and I would like to have closer ties to the Phillips family still residing in Boxted England in hopes of someday visiting to see your wonderful country in person.”

The June meeting will be held on Wednesday 9 June in the village hall from 7.30 pm.

    Boxted Bridge update

An update has been posted on the Boxted Bridge webpage to advertise coring investigations that are planned to take place in from 5 – 9 July at Boxted Bridge on Wick Road. These activities will establish the extent of the existing foundations at the abutments and support any future plans for the bridge. Please note dates may be subject to change if the works are affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.

During this period it will be necessary to temporarily close Wick Road at Boxted Bridge 24 hours a day until the works are complete due to the restricted working area. No vehicles will be permitted to pass over the structure until the works are complete and the road is reopened. Signed diversions will be in place during the closure and nearby residential properties will remain accessible from either side of the structure.

Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be possible over the structure during these activities.

    1974 photo of Boxted Bridge

Lucinda de Jasay writes: A friend discovered this photograph of Boxted bridge in ‘The Essex & Suffolk River Stour Navigation’ book by John Marriage. The caption reads: Since barge traffic ceased, in places the main channel has become shallow and overgrown. This is mainly due to lack of dredging, as on this 1974 picture taken below Boxted bridge. The Mill House is partially obscured by the coach -its passengers probably on one of the popular ‘mystery’ tours.

We think this may have been the Saturday bus on its route from Stoke by Nayland to Colchester (see earlier update) With a magnifier you can just read the word Norfolk’s on the side of the bus – is that Tim Smith perhaps sitting in the driver seat?
