    Faces of the Village

    Michael Williams

Michael is a professional woodturner registered under The Worshipful Company of Turners (see the motif embroidered on his smock)

Michael currently spends some of his time as senior supervisor at the North Colchester Men’s Shed where he ensures that men enjoy learning or honing their skills in a safe manner.

The Men’s Shed (below), which is situated on the Langham/Boxted border is a local, once derelict barn which in the past housed cattle and a milking parlour.

The current members have done all the refurbishment work and made the benches that are used to do the woodworking on. A lot of the tools and machinery have been donated or obtained with grants or long term loans.

There is a relaxation area with a dart board is already in place with future plans for a half size snooker table:

One end of the building has been left with enough room to get a vehicle in so that maintenance work on vehicles can take place.

The Men’s Shed is currently open two days a week 9 – 1 pm with an annual fee of £20 to join and £2 per session. It provides a social space for men, especially older men, to meet and chat while working on various woodworking or other projects.

It is open to any applicants. An electrician would be a welcome addition to the current group.

As you may be aware, local resident Robert Spittal has been fundraising for an NHS £1.00 appeal to help say thank you to the NHS staff who have taken part in the phenomenal Covid-19 vaccination programme.

Robert would like to say another “thank you” – this time to all the locals who have contributed to this very worthy cause.

If you wish to make a donation, Robert’s Just Giving page can be reached at  Robert Spittal is fundraising for Healthcare Workers’ Foundation (justgiving.com) . Here you will find the full details of Robert’s fundraising idea.

    Making inroads

Above:  Straight Road, Boxted in April 2020 during the first Covid Lockdown

Essex County Councillor Lewis Barber is proposing an inter-Parish collaboration between Boxted, Langham, Horkesley and Dedham parishes, so that all can work together to form a more holistic overview of transport issues, specifically relating to road use, in our ward.

It is hoped that by working together the parishes can implement more effective schemes more efficiently across the region, without the need for multiple similar but discontinuous schemes. Working together the parishes will have more power, greater access to resources and will be able to avoid pushing traffic problems from one parish to the next

A meeting was held on Tuesday 22nd of June with representatives of all four parishes, chaired by Cllr Barber and also with Councillor Nigel Chapman in attendance. Those present at the meeting expressed a strong interest in establishing a regional transport management group to tackle what are perceived to be key issues for the parishes.

Cllr Barber was thanked for proposing the scheme and will report back as ideas progress on how best it will be taken forward.
