    Church services

    Sunday 5 December

9.30 All Age Service St Peter’s, Boxted

3 pm Advent Carols with Boxted Silver Methodist Band at Boxted Village Hall

England’s only Methodist Silver Band has 20 bookings for December

Boxted Methodist Silver Band – England’s only surviving Methodist silver band – has a busy schedule for December with 20 performances listed.

They range from church services to village hall gatherings, and from doorstep playing in different residential areas of Boxted to a performance in the rear yard of Colchester Fire Station.

The Band has 30 members. The full band will not be playing at all 20 listed dates. Most will comprise fewer musicians, with the various dates shared out amongst members but with the importance that the range of instruments is maintained to give the required musical balance.

    Boxted Dates

    • Sunday 5  there will be a performance at 4pm outside Boxted Village Hall.
    • Tuesday 7 members will play at the Band’s new headquarters in Boxted, Fillpots Garden Centre in Straight Road, at 3pm in support of St Helena Hospice.

    • Sunday 12 – 1pm – Fillpots, and then crossing to the other side of Straight Road to Fred Smith’s Christmas Trees

In October, Boxted Parish Council formed a volunteer-led Biodiversity and Sustainability working group.

This group has now met twice and is establishing how it can focus its efforts to achieve the aims of enhancing biodiversity in Boxted and its surrounding area as well as promoting sustainability and contributing to national carbon reduction goals.

The first project is to smarten up Boxted’s Village Green, planting bulbs ready for Spring 2022, so starting to bring the countryside into the village. Boxted residents may have noticed a flurry of gardening activity on the grassed area in front of the new housing development by Carter’s Hill.

Plans are well underway to transform it into a beautiful open space for everyone to enjoy – with planted areas to encourage insects and birds to return to the heart of the village, as well as plenty of space for people to sit, walk and enjoy the new surroundings.

Members of Boxted’s Biodiversity & Sustainability Group have chosen bulbs and wildflowers for Spring, which they are busy planting – and have further plans for more species to be added to continue the flowering throughout the year.

Anyone who is interested in finding out more about the inspiration for the Village Green Project, then please read the blog

The group is still open to more volunteers whether to attend the meetings or just to volunteer in working groups in the new year. Keep an eye out for advertised events.
