Boxted Methodist Band plays in London

Boxted Methodist Silver Band – England’s only surviving Methodist band – took centre stage at the annual “Daffodil Day Service” held in Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.

The Band played several tunes as the congregation gathered in the huge central hall which is regarded by many as the “cathedral” of Methodism in the UK. During the service itself they played “Your Raise Me Up” and later “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”.

Leading the afternoon’s service was the Rev Tony Miles, Superintendent Minister at Methodist Central Hall, who started his Ministry some 33 years ago at Wimpole Road Methodist Church in Colchester. He performed the formal welcome with Pam Rhodes from BBC Television’s “Songs of Praise”.

The Rev Miles also interviewed the Boxted Band’s Musical Director, Victoria Steinitz, who told the congregation about the challenges the Band had experienced over the past three years with the closure of Boxted Methodist Church, the loss of the School Room which had been the Band’s home for more than 100 years and the challenges of the Covid lock-down.

But she pointed out that, for the 32 members, the future was bright with the Wednesday practice evenings now held at their new base at Fillpots Garden Centre in Boxted Straight Road.

Boxted Methodist Silver Band was formed in 1898. Next year is its 125th anniversary. Numerous events have been booked for this year, including a weekend in September playing at Dover Castle.
