    High Voltage!

    East Anglia GREEN consultation launch

Pictured: A screenshot from interactive map showing proposed route for overhead pylons through Boxted. Go to https://eastangliagreen.participatr.io/index.php?contentid=27 to view full map

As you may have seen on BBC Look East recently, East Anglia GREEN is a proposal to build a new high voltage network reinforcement between Norwich, Bramford and Tilbury. While our existing high voltage electricity network in East Anglia has been sufficient until today, it doesn’t have the capability needed to reliably and securely transport all the energy that will be connected by 2030 while working to the required standards.

The network reinforcement that East Anglia GREEN will provide would be achieved by the construction and operation of a new 400 kV electricity transmission line over a distance of approximately 180 km and a new 400 kV connection substation.

The reinforcement would comprise mostly overhead line (including pylons and conductors – the ‘line’ part), underground cabling through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), works at existing substations at Norwich, Bramford and Tilbury and a new 400 kV connection substation in the Tendring district.

East Anglia GREEN will play a vital role in delivering electricity efficiently, reliably, and safely and will support the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions.

    Consultation Events

To support the consultation, East Anglia GREEN Team is holding a series of in-person events and online webinars. The nearest events to Boxted and Langham are:

    Boxted Village Walk

    Meet 10am Saturday 14 May
    The Hub/Playing Fields

Pictured: the beautiful oak trees which are a feature of Boxted

The Boxted Biodiversity and Sustainability working group are looking to restart the once popular village walks. The first walk is proposed for Saturday 14 May, meeting at 10am from the Village playing fields/Hub.

For this initial walk a circular route of 3 miles will be planned, including some road walking, but as much offroad footpath walking as possible, returning to the Hub for refreshments. If the idea is popular then it could grow to longer and more frequent walks in future. No pre-commitment required, simply turn up on the day.

    100 attend Band’s Spring concert

Around 100 people attended a Spring concert performed by Boxted Methodist Silver Band at Stoke-by-Nayland Parish Church.

Special guest was soloist Mariam Davina from ITV’s “The Voice” who sang in each half of the programme.

She and the band met last month at the annual Daffodil concert at Methodist Central Hall, London, and she accepted an invitation to come to Suffolk to sing at the Boxted Band’s Spring concert.

Boxted Methodist Silver Band, conducted by Victoria Steinitz, is England’s only surviving Methodist Silver Band. Following the closure of Boxted Methodist Church in July 2019, the Band is now based at Fillpots Garden Centre in Boxted Straight Road.

The Band, formed in 1898, will be celebrating its 125th anniversary next year. It remains committed to its Methodist roots, but it also has a wide repertoire of music from uplifting hymns to film scores and other popular numbers. It has 32 members, from teenagers to the eldest aged 89.

Saturday’s concert was in aid of Band funds. A programme of events in the coming months will include a weekend in September where they will perform twice in Dover Castle, a concert on the Saturday and playing in a church service on the Sunday.
