    Severalls Lane Bridge repair update

An update from Cllr Lewis Barber, recently posted on Facebook:

“I today received an update on Severalls Lane Bridge from National Highways. You may recall that a meeting took place on 28th April between National Highways, who are responsible for the bridge, and Essex Highways.

“However, due to pre-election laws, I did not know about the content and outcome of that meeting until today. Key points:

    1. The southern outer bridge beam took the brunt of the impact but the cross-members to the inner beam were crushed and transferred some of the force to that beam, which is also bent.

    2. The bridge is capable of supporting its own weight, it is not strong enough to carry traffic, hence the protracted closure.

    3. The option National Highways is pursuing is to heat and bend to inner beam to give the deck more structural integrity. The dented section of the outer beam can be cut away and a new section welded in. Once both beams are straight, the cross-members can be replaced, and the bridge reopened.

    4. National Highways is now considering how to carry this out with the minimal number of full closures of the bridge and/or the A12 to reduce the impact on the traffic and the local community. Essex Highways has been brought in during the planning and design stage to assist.

    5. Unfortunately, work will not be carried out before the current A12 concrete road replacement works are complete, followed by the smaller works around the Crown interchange. The bridge works will need to be done before the widening scheme at Mark Tey begins on the marriage carriageway, subject to DCO approval.

    6. Therefore, the work is likely to commence in 18-24 months and will need to be completed in approximately 3 months.

    7. National Highways advises that it anticipates that it would take at least a year to get the repair scheme through detailed design. It will start this now so that it coincides with when work can commence with the other roadworks in the area.

“I welcome the clarity on the plan going forward. However, it is deeply disappointing to know that there is still such a long time until is expected to commence. It remains unclear to me how it has taken so long to get to this point. I will work to ensure that the above timescales are adhered to, if not improved on.”
