Free trees – all bark and no bite!

Cllr Lewis Barber, Member for Constable Division, has been offered the chance by ECC to choose ten sites across his ECC division for the planting of trees. He writes:

“In October 2019, the Council committed to plant £1million worth of trees over the next five years. This included planting 375,000 trees, over 150 hectares, equivalent to the size of 210 football pitches. So far, the initiative has exceeded its targets for the first three years, making a total of:

    • trees: 241,560
    • hectares: 75
    • hedgerows: 23,664m

“The primary reason for planting trees is to lock up carbon, offsetting the carbon produced which is contributing to ongoing climate change. But there are many other good reasons to plant forests and trees, such as to improve air quality, encourage biodiversity, and reduce flooding.

“The trees now on offer are free, although the costs of installation and maintenance will be with the landowner. They can be any of the following:

    • Hawthorn
    • Oak
    • Hornbeam
    • Silver birch
    • Rowan
    • Hazel
    • Field maple
    • Crab apple

Please email: Cllr.Lewis.Barber@essex.gov.uk  if you are interested.

Above: The landscape of the main roads through Boxted have unique natural plantings of oak and hawthorn. Planting trees  on your own property will enrich the local landscape.

    “Welcome to Boxted” village sign

Situated at the Myland end of Straight Road, it is thought to be the only such “welcome” sign in the country which names any Band. Recently erected, it could not have been better time, coming just days after the Band’s 125th anniversary concert.

Although abandoned by Colchester Methodist Circuit following the closure of Boxted Methodist Church in 2019, the Band was determined to play on, with 30+ members, and now based at Boxted Primary School, it is arguably at the strongest it has ever been. Added to which, starting this month, pupils are being taught to play musical instruments under the tuition of the Band’s Principal Cornet player!

The Band takes the name of Boxted near and far. It will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Communities encouraged to have their say on future of Essex waste

Everything we throw away has a cost, not just for us but for our environment too. So, we need to work together to reduce waste, protect our planet and conserve valuable resources.

The Essex Waste Partnership has set out how it plans to manage recycling and waste in Essex over the next 30 years in a draft strategy. Residents and businesses are being encouraged to share their views on it and help to inform the final version.

For further information, read the overview about the Waste Strategy HERE
