Are you pro-wheelie?

Cllr Lewis Barber’s recent Facebook feed highlighted the Council’s proposed change to waste collections in our area. It read:

“I have mixed views on the proposed changes to waste collections across Colchester Borough, which will see wheelie bins rolled out across more areas from June, as well as co-mingling for recycling (except glass and food) The full roll out is proposed by June 2027.

“I strongly support co-mingling for recyclables. This means one container for all recyclables, making it easier for households to recycle. A big tick for me that one to boost recycling, although glass and food will be recycled separately still.

“However, wheelie bins have never gone done well when we’ve surveyed on them across the areas we represent. What is more, there is the cost to the taxpayer of the rollout and, personally, I think they are unsightly. But even if that was my view, I’ve always taken the stance that I would support what the areas I represent want- surveys have said on more than one occasion ‘no’ by healthy margins. That may have changed so it’ll be useful to hear feedback on the proposals.

“There will be some exemptions and you can find more details here, including about the new calendar being issued from June. The summary service can be accessed HERE.”
