VE Celebrations in 1995

Joint celebration with Boxted and Langham held on Boxted Playing field.

These photos are part of an album kindly donated to Boxted Village Archives by the late Mrs Laura Smerdon, long time resident of Langham.

Note the two young lads in the fore loader bucket on the tractor which was being driven by their father.  Health and Safety regulations were perhaps only just coming in 30 years ago?

Dove Cottage

This picture has turned up in someone’s possessions.

We believe it is a cottage in Boxted.  Can anyone tell us where it is?

Heather Dennis

The memorial service for Heather, who sadly died recently aged 80 after a short illness, will be held at St Peter’s Church, Boxted on Monday 19 May at 1 pm.

Heather was a long time member of the flower rota for Boxted Church and for many years helped with  the Thomas Love Charity which was set up in 1565 for the general benefit of the poor of the parish of Boxted.  The charity was wound up in 2009 and the funds transferred to Beacon House, Colchester, a charity for the homeless.  Heather also delivered Meals on Wheels to residents both in Boxted and other neighbouring villages. This service was absorbed by other agencies over the years.

Pictured above: One of Heather’s floral arrangements in Boxted Church in September 2024.

Boxted History Group

Wednesday 21 May, 8pm
Boxted Village Hall

Wendy Shepherd will talk about the 1939 census.  All welcome.

Boxted is lucky to have several social groups and activities taking place at the village hall, one of which is the monthly history group where speakers come and share some insider knowledge on their chosen subject. Already this year we’ve learned about the importance of Colchester’s Roman Circus the history of the cockney language and the Life and Times of Essex highwaymen. The sessions are friendly and welcoming and for £15 a year represent great value and make a pleasant evening out doing something a little bit different. The evenings are very relaxed with no requirement to participate other than maybe ask question if you feel you wish to at the end of the talks or maybe have a chat with other villagers over a cup of tea at the end. So come and join us and hear about something new – or rather something old!

Meetings take place at Boxted Village Hall from 7.30pm on the dates below along with some planned trips for those interested which will be 19 June to Bawdsey Radar and 20th August for the Electric Palace at Harwich.
