Events this week …

Are you interested in coming along for the 2nd annual Boxted Spring Clean? Join us outside the Boxted village hall at 11 am on Saturday 4th May. All welcome!
Last year, a team of us had great fun helping out around the village – not only litter picking, but sign cleaning and general tidying up too! We will provide all the equipment (but recommend you bring along your own gloves, we do have a range of sizes, but you may be more comfortable bringing your own) and of course, there will be refreshments provided afterwards. This is our opportunity to help out the fantastic team of regular litter pickers in Boxted!
Just so we know how much equipment to bring along, we would be grateful if you can fill out this Google Form: Click here!
We look forward to seeing you there!

Boxted Bridge Update

Lucinda de Jasay writes:
We fully appreciate that this road closure will be inconvenient to those who regularly use the route however as a responsible highways authority we must put public safety first while our investigations continue”. https:/ www.essexhighways.org/highway-schemes-and-developments/highway-schemes/colchester-schemes/boxted-bridge-wick-road-boxted-colchester
The bridge – on the Suffolk border – was due to remain closed until further notice “while highway engineers assess the situation and consider next steps.” (Council spokesman BBC News 30 June 2023 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-66072663 )
A structural assessment based on the recent findings of the PI should be undertaken urgently in order to better understand the risks to the public. (Ringway Jacobs A8 form/Emergency Action/ 29 June 2023 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a7xiyCJriBeslDp91grg0H5ixL2ezOyr/view?usp=sharing )
Essex Highways are fully aware that a potential testing/analysis option for the bridge exists. This is a dynamic test where the structure (Boxted Bridge) is subject to a small load (excitation) with the structure then monitored to see what the response of the structure is at various positions. This actual data can then be fed into a finite element model to establish the actual capabilities of the structure.
You may wish to write Essex Highways to ask why this test has not yet been carried out in order to satisfy safety concerns and facilitate pedestrian access:

Boxted Dark Sky Fair

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended our recent Astronomy & Wildlife Fair at Boxted Village Hall on April 7th. It was extremely successful with many visitors enjoying the talks which explained the detrimental effects of light pollution on wildlife, the local environment, carbon-footprint and energy wastage. Later talks included a popular and interactive talk on the planets and solar system that certainly enthralled the younger members of the audience and a talk on astrophotography by a local resident. Fortunately, the sky was clear and many visitors were able to view planets, galaxies and star clusters from the hall car park using a selection of telescopes supplied by local amateur astronomers.
The meeting was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of controlling the spread of unnecessary and expensive light pollution in the Dedham Vale and was hosted by members of the Dedham Vale National Landscape Dark Skies Campaign. A recent collaboration with Boxted Parish Council resulted in a highly successful outcome regarding the new lighting in the Village Hall car park. Members of the Dark Skies Campaign were able to act in an advisory capacity and liaise with the electrical company who installed the new lighting. The result was that appropriate lighting was installed which illuminated just the car park and not surrounding residential areas, and utilised fixtures that were properly shielded, preventing glare and disturbance to local wildlife. Additionally, the lighting is controlled by a timer which results in the lights only being on when necessary. Our thanks go to Boxted Parish Council who made this possible and have helped immensely with keeping Boxted the wonderful village that it is.
Everybody can do their bit in preserving our dark country skies. For further information please view and download the new lighting design guide at: https://dedhamvale-nl.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Lighting-Guidance-in-National-Landscapes.pdf
