Additions to War Memorial Plaque

Annette Whybrow, Boxted Village Archivist, writes:
When we did the research for the WW1 commemorative publication, “Lest we Forget”, we discovered that not all the men from Boxted who died were named on the Memorial in church. This was mainly because their relatives no longer lived in the area by the time funds were raised to erect the Memorial. At the time, those in charge in each Parish asked for names in their localities and did not have access to a sophisticated data base of the Fallen, like The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In 2014 we obtained permission to add the names of 5 soldiers to the Memorial.
Recently, Simon Gallup, village historian of Langham, brought our attention to another 4 men who lived in Boxted who fought and died in WW1 and so we have now been able to include their names too by the addition of a new supplemental brass plaque. All four were very young men when they died. Here are their poignant details:
- Charles Alfred George, Norfolk Rgt. Died on 01/10/1916, at the Somme, aged 18. He lived in Cage Lane.
- James Stuart Butler, Suffolk Rgt. Died on 04/11/1916, aged 20. He lived at Plumbs Farm.
- Frederick Benjamin Francis, Royal Scots. Died 20/10/1918,aged 21. He lived at Cheshunts Cottage, Church Street.
- Percy Vickers Brown was operating with a Canadian Force. Died 18/07/1916 aged 25. He lived at Old House Farm, Boxted.
What’s on in May …

Are you interested in coming along for the 2nd annual Boxted Spring Clean? Join us outside the Boxted village hall at 11 am on Saturday 4th May. All welcome!
Last year, a team of us had great fun helping out around the village – not only litter picking, but sign cleaning and general tidying up too! We will provide all the equipment (but recommend you bring along your own gloves, we do have a range of sizes, but you may be more comfortable bringing your own) and of course, there will be refreshments provided afterwards. This is our opportunity to help out the fantastic team of regular litter pickers in Boxted!
Just so we know how much equipment to bring along, we would be grateful if you can fill out this Google Form: Click here!
We look forward to seeing you there!
