What’s on in August …

Perseid Meteor Watch

Saturday 12 August, 8pm – 11pm
Boxted Village Hall

Come and join us for an astronomically themed evening where we plan to view the annual Perseid meteor shower. This is one of the best events of the astronomical calendar and we hope to get a good view of this exciting event.

Meteors (or shooting stars) are small pieces of debris that burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere due to friction. Every year in August the Earth travels through a stream of debris left by a comet. Although most of the debris particles are small (typically smaller than a grain of rice) they can produce a lovely view as they streak across the night sky.

The number of meteors visible is difficult to predict but conditions this year are very favourable, with no glare from the Moon which can hide all but the brightest meteors. Also, the timing of the peak of the shower is excellent for the UK so we are hoping for enhanced meteor rates. The best views will come in the early hours but we are hoping to see plenty of shooting stars. It can get quite cold later in the evening so bring warm clothing.

Of course, events like this are hugely dependent on the weather! If it’s cloudy we will have a series of talks inside the hall. There will be local amateur astronomers available to answer any questions and members of the Dedham Vale Dark Skies Campaign will explain why it’s important to fight light pollution and preserve the night sky for future generations and wildlife.

Hedgehogs need you!

Sign up to have a hole drilled in your fence to create a passage for hedgehogs to pass through your garden easily while out looking for food and a mate.

Increasingly hedgehogs can be found in urban areas, as their natural habits are scarce in the countryside, for example, the depletion of grasslands and hedgerows.

We can arrange to have a volunteer drill a hole in your fence, at no charge. You will also receive a free highway fence sign to place above the hole.  Be sure to discuss and agree with your neighbour first.

The offer is open to Boxted and neighbouring villages only.

Next step, contact us on FaceBook or email us at:  boxtedwildlife@gmail.com
