Boxted Jubilee Oak

The village has been generously gifted an oak tree from Colchester Borough Council to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee. This has now been planted on the new village green at Boxted Cross for all to enjoy. There will be a short unveiling ceremony for the Oak tree on Saturday 4th at 1pm to commemorate the Jubilee.

A programme of gardens open will be available from Langham Community Shop from 30 May or from any of the daisy signposted gardens on the day. Free programme and free entry to gardens.

Jubilee Celebrations: Langham’s History
Saturday 4 June, 11.30 am – 3.00 pm
Langham Community Centre

See and hear about Langham’s history. There will be displays of photos and memorabilia about the village and its life, exhibits by Boxted Airfield Historical Group and an illustrated talk by Simon Gallup, local historian at 2.00 pm.

WI Big Jubilee Picnic Competition (1)
Sunday 5 June
Cake Decoration
The Boxted WI will be awarding a prize for the best Jubilee-themed decorated cake. To enter, decorate a Victoria sponge cake (recipe below if you don’t have your own) to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and bring your entry to Boxted Village Hall by 1.30pm on Sunday 5 June. The judges will be considering the decoration and not the taste of the sponge cake.

Over £2,000 raised for MND

Members of Boxted Runners Ian Rayment and Jim Spurgeon completed the recent Half Marathon in 2 hours and 3 minutes and so far have raised over £2,000 for the MNDA Colchester & NE Essex group.
Ian and Jim were running in support of Alison Phillips, a popular member of the village community who, sadly, has been diagnosed with MND.

The Langham Community Centre hosts a wide range of regular clubs and unique activities. Many of these groups would welcome new members, so don’t hesitate to browse the ‘Activities’ page on the website or see the Facebook page to find out more.

Thursday 9 June, 7.30pm
Mary Newton, forensic pathologist, will be the speaker on with a talk entitled “Blood, Sweat and Fears”. Non-members are very welcome for a fee of £5, which includes refreshments.
At the last meeting, members enjoyed a sparkling wine and nibbles reception before being entertained by a fashion show staged by Bromley & Co. of Ipswich There was also a varied selection of handbags and gifts to buy and a further similar evening with autumn wear is planned for later in the year.

Green Energy Project

A petition has been set up to ‘SAY NO TO 180km of Essex Suffolk Norfolk pylons’ and is asking the Government to look realistically to the green future and build a strategic offshore grid instead. You can find the petition at www.pylonseastanglia.co.uk or you can write to local MP Sir Bernard Jenkin – bernard.jenkin.mp@parliament.uk who is chair of OffSET (the Off-Shore Electricity Grid Task Force).
St Peter’s Markets Plants

Over 500 plants are for sale in aid of Langham with Boxted Church Funds. Most plants are £1.50 to £3.50 with quantity discounts. Perennials, English native trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers are available. First come first served but all will be done to fulfil requests.
